Mercedes has the honor of being able to trace its family tree directly back to the very first modern automobile ever built. No other car in the world can make that claim. Karl Benz is credited with building the first modern automobile in 1985. Powered by a gasoline engine, it ran on three wheels. His company, Benz & Cie, received a patent for the design, and by 1893, two dozen had been made and sold.
About this time, another German manufacturer entered the automobile market. Daimler Motor Company was started by two German engineers, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. It was their company that produced the first vehicle to bear the Mercedes name in 1902.
The companies existed apart from one another for a couple of decades, but World War I and the economic slump which followed sent the two manufacturers into tentative talks. In 1924, they agreed to work together and standardize production, purchasing, and marketing while maintaining their own brands. In 1926, however, they merged together into Daimler-Benz, calling the cars they manufactured Mercedes Benz.
Today, the Mercedes name is synonymous with wealth and power. The name has been worn by some of the finest automobiles ever made. Car collectors search the globe for highly favored models, and enthusiasts excitedly analyze each new model unveiled. Owning a Mercedes has long been a symbol of high rank.

Volkswagen cars just seems to go from strength to strength. In recent times it has quietly risen through the ranks of the motor industry to appear as the third largest car manufacturer in the world today. It has done this by a combination of sheer business acumen, some clever acquisitions and a certain amount of good fortune.
Volkswagen Group, or VW AG, as it is now known from its previously ill-advised acronym VAG is Europe’s biggest car manufacturer, with its headquarters located in Wolfsburg in central Germany. VW AG not only owns the brand VW, but also owns Audi cars, Bentley cars, Bugatti cars, Lamborghini cars, Seat and Skoda cars which is an enviable portfolio by anyone’s reckoning.
To give a brief history lesson, it was in the year 1933 that Adolf Hitler decided that the German public deserved a “people’s car”; in essence it should have four seats to accommodate the average German family, be able to drive up to 60mph but most importantly to be purchased by means of a saving scheme whereby people saved five German marks a week in order to purchase a car. Many paid into the savings scheme but the outbreak of war ultimately meant that few actually received their car with the notable exception of Hitler who although couldn’t drive received a Beetle for his 49th Birthday! The later success of the Beetle and ultimately the success of Volkswagen arose from these humble beginnings.
The manufacture of the Beetle was a key factor to its success. The main aim was to keep the production cost per unit as low as possible. Since this was the most challenging part of the equation, an entire city, Wolfsburg, was built in central Germany to host the production site. Wolfsburg’s infrastructure was based on the specific needs of Volkswagen. The production facility benefited from its location in relation to other industrial areas of Germany. In addition the railway connection to the Ruhr-Valley, Germany’s largest industrial area, was vital as VW was dependent on the steel supply from there. Wolfsburg was built near the town of Braunschweig, which enabled VW to recruit a skilled local workforce.
Once the production aspect was completed, Ferdinand Porsche facilitated the manufacturing process and introduced flow production. He based this on the same principles of flow production at Henry Ford’s production lines in Detroit/USA. The disadvantage of flow production was the limited variety and flexibility within the production line, which was overcome through the production of just one model – the Beetle.
Through continuous re-investment of profits into research and development, VW grew in importance through the 70s, 80s and 90s. However, in the early 90s, VW was facing a dilemma regarding their position in the market. It seemed that the luxury car for sale market was growing extensively, leaving VW exposed with their medium range vehicles.
VW’s CEO was keen to be involved with high-class brands like Bentley, who had serious financial problems at the time and were in need of backing. VW embarked on a number of high profile acquisitions and with each one introduced the same business philosophies that had worked for them. By the late 90s all of the brands were competing successfully in their markets, improving VW’s overall position. By 2000 VW was operating in nearly every sector of the market including Trucks, leaving them less exposed to risk should one particular market encounter difficulties.
VW’s move to production in Eastern Europe was criticised as it led to job cuts in Germany. However, this was deemed necessary to keep VW competitive as cheaper labour contributed to reducing costs. The ongoing success of Volkswagen is still largely dependent on their well organised infrastructure, not only in Germany but also through their supply channels around the world, which keeps production costs low whilst still maintaining quality, something which has backfired for other car makers.

Honda was founded by Soichiro Honday, a mechanic who developed his own idea for piston rings in 1938, after working at Art Shokai. He attempted to sell them to Toyota cars, who contracted with him. He built a facility to meet Toyota’s demands, but it was almost completely destroyed during World War II.
With what he had left in the Japanese market, Soichiro Honda created a new company. Since his country had been decimated by the war, and was starved for both cash and fuel, but still needed basic, reliable transportation, he attached an engine to a bicycle. This would be the beginning of the “Honda Reasearch Institute Company, Ltd.” While the official Japanese name remains with the company, what the rest of the world knows as the Honda Motor Company was officially founded on September 24, 1948.
Soichiro Honda quickly recovered from the losses incurred during the war by producing and selling a range of motorcycles and scooters. The American Honda Company was founded in 1958, and the first Honda motorcycle was introduced to the US market just a year later. By the 1970’s Honda was the largest producer of motorcycles around, and it retains that title. It wasn’t until 1963 that the first production vehicle from Honda that wasn’t some kind of bike, was first offered in the Japanese market. It was the T360, a small pickup truck with four different body styles and a 30 hp engine. Two months later the first Honda automobile was released - the S500 two door roaster with a 44hp engine and a 4-speed transmission, and the rear wheels were chain-driven.
In 1972, with the introduction of the Civic, Honda finally established its presence in the American automobile market, partly because it was smaller than most American cars. Later, in 1975, the Civic gained popularity because it’s engine could pass emissions tests without the addition of a catalytic converter or a smog pump, and it also offered better fuel efficiency. Later, in 1986, Honda became the first Japanese car maker to offer its own line of luxury cars. Marketed under the name Acura, these are sportier, more powerful redesigns of existing Honda cars. With the current pushes for safety and alternative fuel, Honda is already leading the way. It began selling the hybrid Insight in 1999, and now has hybrid models of its popular Civics and Accords. In addition, Honda was the first Japanese auto maker to include air bags, and it now has side-curtain airbags standard on most vehicles, and plans to add stability control features to its entire line by 2008.
Today, Honda’s Civics and Honda Accord cars, as well as the Odyssey, remain popular choices for American consumers.
